A karat refers to the amount of actual pure gold in the gold. 14K indicates 14 parts gold our of 24. The remaining parts are usually silver, copper, or another metal. What the gold is mixed with affects its color - green, rose, yellow, or white. Most commercial gold jewelry is 14k-18k.
